Introduction

This article has been updated to reflect changes made in Java 8 Update 25. The original article has been archived for Java 7 users and is available on our Java Security Levels - Java 7 u51 - archive version support page

Note

Following the update of Blackboard Learn to October 2014 users will need to add an additional site to the Site Exception List in Java: http://learning-collab-dev.ulster.ac.uk:8012/ this has been added to the list of exceptions supplied below.

Students and staff following this guide to enable the Wimba Voice tools may also need to enable mixed content in their browser. Please see our Wimba 'Voice Server is down' message page for instructions on how to enable mixed content in your browser.

Certain features in Blackboard Learn use Java plugins. Oracle released a client-side Java update (Java Update 8u25) that negatively impacts four Blackboard tools:

  1. Chat
  2. Virtual Classroom
  3. Wimba Voice tools
  4. The ability to upload multiple files in Content Collection within Blackboard Learn

Starting with Java 8 Update 25, users MAY have to configure a Java Site Exception list before their above tools will work properly.

Update: It is anticipated that future versions of Blackboard will NOT use Java
